Gum Contouring (Gingivectomy) in Bangkok
La Posh Dental Clinic · Bangna and Ram Inthra-Ratchada · Open daily 10:30–19:30

Who is gum contouring for?
- A gummy smile where teeth look short
- Uneven gum line between front teeth
- Gum overgrowth during or after braces
- Preparing teeth for veneers or crowns when more tooth needs to show
Not every gummy smile is caused by gum tissue – sometimes it relates to the lip or jaw. The dentist examines you and may take X-rays to check the bone level first.
Steps
- Examination, smile assessment and X-rays if needed
- Plan for the new gum line
- Local anaesthetic
- Excess gum trimmed and shaped
- Aftercare instructions and a follow-up visit
Price
The cost depends on how many teeth are involved, the complexity and the technique. The dentist confirms the price after an examination. See the full price list for other treatments.
Recovery and aftercare
- Mild soreness for a few days is common; take pain relief as advised
- Eat soft, cool food and avoid spicy or very hot food for several days
- Brush gently around the treated area and rinse as instructed
- Gums usually look settled within a few weeks
Types of gum surgery
- Gingivectomy (simple gum trimming): excess gum is trimmed to even out the gum line. Suitable when there is extra gum covering the teeth but no other gum problem. The gum may grow back towards its original level.
- Aesthetic crown lengthening: the gum is trimmed and part of the bone edge under it is reshaped. Suitable when thick gum and bone cover the teeth. Results last longer, depending on the case.
Benefits and things to consider
| Benefits | Things to consider |
|---|---|
| Treats gum overgrowth, deep gum pockets, infected or inflamed gums | Without good oral care afterwards, decay, swollen gums or gum recession can develop |
| Teeth look longer and the smile more even | The dentist must check the bone level first, so X-rays may be needed |
| Helps veneers and crowns look better and makes teeth easier to treat and clean | Simple trimming may need repeating if the gum grows back |
Why gum contouring is often needed
It is often done together with other dental work, for example after braces, with root canal treatment, before fillings, or to correct gums that are too thick or cover too much of the teeth and make eating or cleaning difficult.
Before your appointment
- A full dental examination
- X-rays to check the bone level
- Assessment with the dentist to choose the right technique
- If you have tartar, have scaling at least 2 weeks before the procedure

Frequently asked questions
Does gum contouring hurt?
You usually do not feel pain during the procedure because local anaesthetic is used. Some soreness for a few days afterwards is normal.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the number of teeth, how complex the case is and the technique. The dentist will confirm the cost after an examination.
How long does it take?
Usually about 1–2 hours.
Will the gums grow back?
Results are usually stable when the gum line is planned correctly, but gums can change with inflammation or over time, so good cleaning matters.
Can it be done after braces?
Yes. Gum overgrowth during braces is common and can be reshaped once the braces are off or as the dentist advises.
