Anti-Snoring Oral Appliance in Bangkok – 30,000 THB at La Posh Dental Clinic
In short: An anti-snoring oral appliance (mandibular advancement device) is a custom mouthpiece worn at night that holds the lower jaw slightly forward to open the airway. It can reduce snoring and, together with a doctor, treat mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. At La Posh Dental Clinic it costs 30,000 THB. If you snore with pauses in breathing or heavy daytime sleepiness, get a sleep assessment from a doctor first.

What causes snoring?

During sleep the throat and tongue muscles relax and the airway narrows. Air passing through the narrow space makes the tissues vibrate, which is the snoring sound. In some people the airway closes off so breathing stops for short periods – obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) – which is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and daytime sleepiness.

How does an oral appliance help?

The appliance fits over the upper and lower teeth and moves the lower jaw and tongue slightly forward. This widens the airway behind the tongue so air flows more easily and snoring decreases. The amount of advancement is adjusted gradually to find a position that works and is comfortable.

Who may benefit

  • Chronic snorers whose doctor has ruled out severe sleep apnea
  • People diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea
  • People who cannot use, or cannot tolerate, a CPAP machine – as advised by their doctor
  • People with enough healthy upper and lower teeth to hold the appliance

Who may not be suitable

  • Severe sleep apnea, which usually needs other primary treatment from a doctor
  • Few remaining teeth, loose teeth or untreated gum disease
  • Jaw joint (TMJ) problems, jaw pain or limited mouth opening

Frequently asked questions

Does an anti-snoring appliance work for everyone?

No. It works best for snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnea. You should be assessed by a doctor and a dentist first.

Do I need a sleep test first?

It is strongly recommended, especially if you stop breathing during sleep, wake up gasping or feel very sleepy in the day, to rule out severe sleep apnea that needs other treatment.

Is it uncomfortable?

At first your teeth may feel tight or your jaw tired in the morning. This usually improves within a few weeks. Tell the dentist if it hurts so it can be adjusted.

How long does the appliance last?

It depends on use and care. Bring it to your check-ups so the dentist can check the appliance and your teeth.

Can I use an over-the-counter snoring mouthguard instead?

A custom appliance is fitted to your teeth and jaw, reducing the risk to your teeth and jaw joints. It should be used under a dentist’s supervision.
