Orthodontics with Jaw Surgery in Bangkok at La Posh Dental Clinic
In short: Orthodontics with orthognathic (jaw) surgery treats jaw problems that braces alone cannot fix, such as a protruding or retruded jaw, facial asymmetry or a severe bite problem. Braces usually start 1–2 years before surgery and continue 6 months to 2 years afterwards. At La Posh Dental Clinic, the orthodontic part costs about THB 140,000; surgery is planned with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

When is jaw surgery needed?

If the upper and lower jaws are out of proportion, moving the teeth alone may not give a stable bite or a balanced face. In these cases, orthodontics prepares the teeth, surgery repositions the jaw, and orthodontics then fine-tunes the bite. Orthodontic work is led by Dr. Lalita Rutchakitprakarn, orthodontist (license ท.9453), MSc in Orthodontics from National Yang-Ming University (Taiwan). Dr. Lalita was an invited speaker at the 4th TU Orthognathic Surgery Summit (6 August 2026).

Recovery

  • Swelling and bruising are normal and ease over the first weeks
  • Liquid or very soft food for the first 2–4 weeks
  • Most people feel more normal within 1–3 months
  • Follow the surgeon’s and orthodontist’s instructions closely

What can braces with jaw surgery correct?

  • Protruding upper or lower jaw, bringing the jaws into better relation
  • Jaw asymmetry, where one side of the face looks longer or crooked
  • Bite problems where upper and lower teeth do not meet, making chewing easier
  • In some cases, breathing problems such as snoring or sleep apnoea, when the lower jaw sits far back and narrows the airway
  • Facial balance and confidence

An overbite from a small lower jaw, where the upper teeth stick out a lot, can make it hard to close the lips and makes the front teeth easier to injure.

Can I have jaw surgery without braces?

Surgery alone can move the bone, but it cannot fully align the teeth or fine-tune the bite. Without braces, the teeth may not meet well after surgery, which can cause chewing problems later. That is why braces before and after surgery are usually recommended.

Two approaches

ApproachHow it works
Orthodontics firstBraces for about 1–2 years to prepare the teeth, then impressions, a surgical splint and surgery, followed by about 6 months to 2 years of braces to finish
Surgery firstShortens the braces time before surgery by about 6–12 months and avoids a worsening bite while waiting; braces after recovery take about 1 year. Not suitable for every case

Dr. Lalita Rutchakitprakarn has trained in surgery-first orthognathic treatment and was an invited speaker at the 4th TU Orthognathic Surgery Summit (2026).

Frequently asked questions

Does jaw surgery hurt, and how long is recovery?

It is major surgery under general anaesthesia, so you do not feel pain during it. Pain, swelling and bruising afterwards are normal and medication is prescribed. Things become more normal within 1–3 months, varying by person.

Can I talk and eat normally afterwards?

Not right away. Speech may be limited by swelling at first. For the first 2–4 weeks you eat only liquid or very soft food.

How much does it cost?

The orthodontic part is about THB 140,000. Surgery and hospital fees are separate.

Who needs this treatment?

People with jaw-related problems such as a protruding or crooked chin, asymmetry or a severe bite problem. It is planned jointly by an orthodontist and an oral surgeon.

Can braces alone fix my bite?

Sometimes. The dentist assesses X-rays to decide whether braces alone, or braces with surgery, are needed.
